Initial and Continuing Jobless Claims
- Initial jobless claims for the week ending December 25th came in at 198,000, down 8,000 people week over week.
- Continuing claims came in at 1.716 million people versus the adjusted number of 1.856 million people from the week prior, down -140,000 people week over week.
Stocks closed lower on Thursday of last week mostly higher week over week
The DOW closed lower on Thursday of last week, down -59.78 points (-.16%), closing out the week at 36,338.30 points, up +387.70 points week over week. The S&P 500 closed lower on Thursday of last week, down -12.6 points (-.26 %) and closed out the week at 4,766.18, up +40.39 points week over week. The Nasdaq closed lower on Thursday of last week, down -96.59 points (-.61%) and closed out the week at 15,653.40, down -8.43 points week over week.
In overnight trading, DOW futures traded higher and are expected to open at 36,410 this morning up 184 points.
Oil closed up on Thursday of last week and up week over week
West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude closed up +43 cents a barrel on Thursday of last week to settle at $76.99 per barrel up +$3.20 a barrel week over week, while Brent futures closed up +9 cents per barrel to settle at $79.32 per barrel, up $2.47 per barrel week over week.U.S. commercial crude oil inventories (excluding those in the Strategic Petroleum Reserve) decreased by 3.6 million barrels from the previous week. At 420.0 million barrels, U.S. crude oil inventories are 7% below the five year average for this time of year.
Total motor gasoline inventories decreased by 1.5 million barrels week over week and are 6% below the five year average for this time of year.
Distillate fuel inventories decreased by 1.7 million barrels week over week and are 14% below the five year average for this time of year.
Propane/propylene inventories decreased by 3.6 million barrels week over week and are 10% below the five year average for this time of year.
Propane Prices – fell marginally week over week closing at $1.01 per gallon hitting the top end of the 5 year high for this time of year.
Overall, total commercial petroleum inventories decreased by 18.9 million barrels week over week.
U.S. crude oil imports averaged 6.8 million barrels per day for the week ending December 24, 2021 an increase of 600,000 barrels per day week over week. Over the past four weeks, crude oil imports averaged 6.5 million barrels per day, 13.7% more than the same four-week period last year. Total motor gasoline imports (including both finished gasoline and gasoline blending components) averaged 432,000 barrels per day, and distillate fuel imports averaged 162,000 barrels per day for the week ending December 24th.
U.S. crude oil refinery inputs averaged 15.7 million barrels per day during the week ending December 24, 2021 which was 115,000 barrels per day less than the previous week’s average. Refineries operated at 89.7% of their operable capacity.
As of the writing of this report, WTI is poised to open at $76.15 , up 94 cents per barrel from Thursday’s contract close.
North American Rail Traffic
Total North American rail volumes were up 3.2% year over year in week 51 (U.S. +3.7%, Canada +0.4%, Mexico +8.7%) resulting in quarter to date volumes that are down 4.8% and year to date volumes that are up 4.7% year over year (U.S. +5.9%, Canada +1.0%, Mexico +4.4%). 6 of the AAR’s 11 major traffic categories posted year over year increases with the largest increases coming from coal (+15.2%) and nonmetallic minerals (+21.9%). The largest decrease came from grain (-8.2%).
In the East, CSX’s total volumes were up 5.4%, with the largest increases coming from intermodal (+6.9%) and coal (+15.7%). NS’s total volumes were up 4.0%, with the largest increases coming from coal (+19.3%) and chemicals (+16.4%). The largest decrease came from intermodal (-2.4%).
In the West, BN’s total volumes were up 2.3%, with the largest increase coming from coal (+12.7%). The largest decrease came from grain (-11.1%). UP’s total volumes were up 5.5%, with the largest increases coming from coal (+21.1%), stone sand & gravel (+62.2%) and chemicals (+11.3%). The largest decrease came from grain (-26.1%).
In Canada, CN’s total volumes were up 2.7%, with the largest increases coming from coal (+70.6%) and metallic ores (+23.3%). The largest decrease came from intermodal (-4.5%). RTMs were down 0.2%. CP’s total volumes were up 2.0%, with the largest increase coming from intermodal (+14.4%). RTMs were down 6.9%.
KCS’s total volumes were up 3.7%, with the largest increase coming from intermodal (+6.0%). The largest decrease came from petroleum (-30.8%).

Rig Count
North American rig count is down by 43 rigs week over week. The U.S. rig count was flat week over week and up by 235 rigs year over year. The U.S. currently has 586 active rigs. Canada’s rig count was down by 43 rigs week over week but up by 31 rigs year over year and Canada’s overall rig count is 90 active rigs. Overall, year over year, we are up 266 rigs collectively.
