At 439.9 million barrels, <strong><u>U.S. crude oil inventories are -2% below the five-year average for this time of year.<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"919\" height=\"401\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>U.S. crude oil imports averaged 6.2 million barrels per day<\/u><\/strong> during the week ending October 21st, 2022, an increase of 300,000 barrels per day from the previous week. Total carloads for the week ending October 22nd were 353,750, up (+0.04%) compared with the same week in 2021, while weekly intermodal volume was 336,803, down (-2.24%) compared to 2021. <strong><u>6 of the AAR\u2019s 11 major traffic categories posted year-over-year decreases<\/u><\/strong> with the most significant decrease coming from Other (-10.83%). The largest increase was from Motor Vehicles and Parts (+8.34%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the east, <strong><u>CSX\u2019s total volumes were down (-0.54%)<\/u><\/strong>, with the largest decrease coming from Forest Products (-12.22%) and the largest increase from Motor Vehicles and Parts (+13.31%).&nbsp; <strong><u>NS\u2019s volumes were up (0.68%),<\/u><\/strong> with the largest decrease coming from Chemicals (-20.41%) and the largest increases from Grain (+30.59%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the West, <strong><u>BN\u2019s total volumes were down (-7.91%)<\/u><\/strong>, with the largest decreases coming from Metallic Ores and Minerals (-20.01%), and the largest increase coming from Farm Products (+1.84%). <strong><u>UP\u2019s total rail volumes were up (+7.06%)<\/u><\/strong> with the largest decrease coming from Forest Products (-12.88%) and the largest increase coming from Motor Vehicles and Parts (+31.87%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Canada, <strong><u>CN\u2019s total rail volumes were down (-4.87%)<\/u><\/strong> with the largest decrease coming from Other&nbsp; (-30.49%) and the largest increase coming from Coal (+56.90%). <strong><u>CP\u2019s total rail volumes were down (-4.30%)<\/u><\/strong> with the largest decrease coming from Other (-18.42%) and the largest increase coming from Nonmetallic Minerals (+23.60%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>KCS\u2019s total rail volumes were up (+2.71%)<\/u><\/strong> with the largest decrease coming from Farm Products (-20.19%) and largest increase coming from Coal (+24.55%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">S<strong>ource Data: AAR &#8211; PFL Analytics<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center has-black-color has-text-color\" id=\"rig-count\"><strong><u>Rig Count<\/u><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>North American rig count was down by -1 rigs week over week. U.S. rig count was down by -3 rigs week-over-week<\/u><\/strong> and up by +224 rigs year over year. The U.S. currently has 768 active rigs. <strong><u>Canada\u2019s rig count was up by 2 rigs week-over-week, <\/u><\/strong>and up by 46 rigs year-over-year. Canadian volumes were mixed; CP\u2019s shipments decreased by -7.3% week over week, and CN\u2019s volumes were up by +2.7% week over week. U.S. shipments were also mixed.&nbsp; CSX had the largest percentage decrease, down by -12.5%, and the UP had the largest percentage increase and was up by +7.3%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><a><\/a><strong><em>We are eyeing Crude by Rail Out of Canada<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Canadian Energy Regulator (\u201cCER\u201d) updated its monthly crude by rail numbers on October 23, 2022. <strong><u>For August&nbsp; 2022, Canada exported 155,146 barrels per day by rail (up by 1,954 barrels per day month over month)<\/u><\/strong> the first month-over-month increase in four months. <strong><u>Crude by rail out of Alberta has been popular of late for raw Bitumen (no diluent added), as it can be shipped as a non-hazmat product resulting in lower shipping costs <\/u><\/strong>that are competitive with pipelines. We were hoping to see month-over-month increases, but with <strong><u>continued competition from the U.S. government<\/u><\/strong> releasing heavy crude from the SPR it is difficult to get a handle on the fundamentals \u2013 <strong><u>Let\u2019s see what happens after the U.S. government stops selling our strategic reserves into the gulf which has now stretched beyond the elections and into November and December. <\/u><\/strong>&nbsp;Crude by rail is also popular for off-spec products that can be blended here in the United States and in areas where there is no pipeline access.&nbsp; Before crude by rail out of Canada can come back in a meaningful way, supply needs to exceed pipeline capacity and we need to see a much wider basis for a sustained period of time (or at least predictable).&nbsp; We have seen wider basis numbers that have worked albeit very briefly not allowing traders to lock in meaningful margins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>WCS versus WTI closed out the trading day on Friday of last week at \u2013US$28.98 per barrel,<\/u> <\/strong>with an implied value of $58.78 per barrel in Edmonton.
