The U.S. made moves on Friday of last week to revoke Russia&#8217;s \u201cmost favored nation\u201d status, announcing a ban on their seafood, alcohol, and diamonds. They also left the door open for future tariffs. &#8220;Iran talks on hold is one factor supporting markets,&#8221; said UBS analyst Giovanni Staunovo, adding that &#8220;market participants will now closely track Russian export data to get a sense how much supply is disrupted.&#8221; <strong><u>WTI traded up $3.31 or 3.1% to close at $109.33. Brent traded up $3.34 or 3.1% to close at $112.67<\/u><\/strong> on Friday of last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>U.S. commercial crude oil inventories<\/u><\/strong> (excluding those in the Strategic Petroleum Reserve) <strong><u>decreased by 1.9 million barrels<\/u><\/strong> week over week. total commercial petroleum inventories decreased by 8.1 million barrels week over week.<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>U.S. crude oil imports averaged 6.3 million barrels per day<\/u><\/strong> for the week ending March 4, 2022, an increase of 600,000 barrels per day week over week. Over the past four weeks, crude oil imports averaged 6.2 million barrels per day, 10.1% more than the same four-week period last year. <strong><u>Total motor gasoline imports<\/u><\/strong> (including both finished gasoline and gasoline blending components) <strong><u>averaged 760,000 barrels per day<\/u><\/strong>, and <strong><u>distillate fuel imports averaged 274,000 barrels per day for the week ending March 4th<\/u><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"916\" height=\"398\" src=\"https:\/\/pflpetroleum.com\/reports\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/7-US-Imports-of-Crude-Oil-3-14-2022.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5825\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pflpetroleum.com\/reports\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/7-US-Imports-of-Crude-Oil-3-14-2022.png 916w, https:\/\/pflpetroleum.com\/reports\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/7-US-Imports-of-Crude-Oil-3-14-2022-300x130.png 300w, https:\/\/pflpetroleum.com\/reports\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/7-US-Imports-of-Crude-Oil-3-14-2022-768x334.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 916px) 100vw, 916px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>U.S. crude oil refinery inputs averaged 15.4 million barrels per day<\/u><\/strong> during the week ending March 4, 2022 which was 21,000 barrels per day less than the previous week\u2019s average.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"916\" height=\"397\" src=\"https:\/\/pflpetroleum.com\/reports\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/8-US-Refiner-Net-Input-of-Crude-3-14-2022.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5826\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pflpetroleum.com\/reports\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/8-US-Refiner-Net-Input-of-Crude-3-14-2022.png 916w, https:\/\/pflpetroleum.com\/reports\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/8-US-Refiner-Net-Input-of-Crude-3-14-2022-300x130.png 300w, https:\/\/pflpetroleum.com\/reports\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/8-US-Refiner-Net-Input-of-Crude-3-14-2022-768x333.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 916px) 100vw, 916px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u><strong><u>As of the writing of this report, WTI is poised to open at $104.80 , down&nbsp; $4.53 per barrel from Friday\u2019s close.<\/u><\/strong><\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"north-american-rail-traffic\"><strong>North American Rail Traffic<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>Total North American rail volumes were down 3.3% year over year in week 9<\/u><\/strong> (U.S. -1.9%, Canada -10.8%, Mexico +10.6%) resulting in quarter to date volumes that are down 3.9% year over year (U.S. -2.3%, Canada -10.4%, Mexico +1.5%). 8 of the AAR&#8217;s 11 major traffic categories posted year over year declines with the largest decreases coming from intermodal (-6.7%), grain (-11.4%) and motor vehicles &amp; parts (-14.0%). The largest increases came from chemicals (+15.1%) and nonmetallic minerals (+13.3%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the East, <strong><u>CSX\u2019s total volumes were down 2.3%<\/u><\/strong>, with the largest decrease coming from coal (-19.4%). <strong><u>NS\u2019s total volumes were down 6.9%<\/u><\/strong>, with the largest decreases coming from intermodal (-8.6%) and motor vehicles &amp; parts (-24.3%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the West, <strong><u>BN\u2019s total volumes were down 2.5%<\/u><\/strong>, with the largest decreases coming from intermodal (-5.5%) and grain (-13.6%). The largest increases came from coal (+9.8%) and chemicals (+20.9%). <strong><u>UP\u2019s total volumes were up 6.0%<\/u><\/strong>, with the largest increases coming from chemicals (+26.6%), coal (+21.4%) and stone sand &amp; gravel (+47.2%). The largest decrease came from intermodal (-3.1%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Canada, <strong><u>CN\u2019s total volumes were down 8.4%<\/u><\/strong>, with the largest decrease coming from intermodal (-16.6%). The largest increase came from coal (+136.6%). Revenue per ton miles was down 8.9%. <strong><u>CP\u2019s total volumes were down 6.6%<\/u><\/strong>, with the largest decreases coming from grain (-18.6%), petroleum (-22.6%) and farm products (-60.0%). Revenue per ton miles was down 12.5%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>KCS\u2019s total volumes were up 4.6%<\/u><\/strong>, with the largest increase coming from grain (+41.9%) and the largest decrease coming from petroleum (-23.9%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Source: Stephens<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"rig-count\"><strong>Rig Count<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>North American rig count is up by +2 rigs week over week. U.S. rig count was up 13 rigs week over week<\/u><\/strong> and up by 281 rigs year over year. The U.S. currently has 663 active rigs. <strong><u>Canada\u2019s rig count was down by -11&nbsp; rigs week over week <\/u><\/strong>and up by 90 rigs year over year and Canada\u2019s overall rig count is 206 active rigs.&nbsp; Overall, <strong><u>year over year, we are up 351 rigs collectively.<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"north-american-rig-count-summary\"><a><\/a><strong>North American Rig Count Summary<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"152\" src=\"https:\/\/pflpetroleum.com\/reports\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/rig-count-3-14-22-1024x152.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5829\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pflpetroleum.com\/reports\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/rig-count-3-14-22-1024x152.png 1024w, https:\/\/pflpetroleum.com\/reports\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/rig-count-3-14-22-300x45.png 300w, https:\/\/pflpetroleum.com\/reports\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/rig-count-3-14-22-768x114.png 768w, https:\/\/pflpetroleum.com\/reports\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/rig-count-3-14-22.png 1069w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"481\" src=\"https:\/\/pflpetroleum.com\/reports\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/rig-count-summary-3-14-22-1024x481.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5830\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pflpetroleum.com\/reports\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/rig-count-summary-3-14-22-1024x481.png 1024w, https:\/\/pflpetroleum.com\/reports\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/rig-count-summary-3-14-22-300x141.png 300w, https:\/\/pflpetroleum.com\/reports\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/rig-count-summary-3-14-22-768x361.png 768w, https:\/\/pflpetroleum.com\/reports\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/rig-count-summary-3-14-22.png 1191w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center has-black-color has-text-color\" id=\"a-few-things-we-are-keeping-an-eye-on\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">A few things we are keeping an eye on:<\/mark><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong><em>Petroleum Carloads<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>The four-week rolling average of petroleum carloads carried on the six largest North American railroads rose to 24,623 from 24,145, which is a gain of 478 rail-cars week over week. <\/u><\/strong>Canadian volumes were higher week over week CP shipments were up by 11.3% while CN volumes were up by 0.1 %.&nbsp; U.S. volumes were mostly higher with the BN having the largest percentage increase (up by 8.0%) CSX was the only class one that lost carloads and was down by 8.2% week over week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><a><\/a><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><em>Energy Prices, Russia and Oil Flows<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>Canada is studying ways to increase pipeline utilization to boost crude exports as Europe seeks to reduce its dependence on Russian oil,<\/u><\/strong> the country\u2019s natural resources minister said on Thursday of last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>Pipeline operator Enbridge Inc. said in a statement that it was in talks with the government <\/u><\/strong>about \u201chow the industry can help relieve the current energy crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most of Canada\u2019s crude exports travel to the United States on Enbridge\u2019s mainline system, with another 590,000 barrels a day flowing on TC Energy\u2019s Keystone pipeline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are looking at whether our pipeline network is fully utilized,\u201d Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson said in a telephone interview. He said the aim was to make an \u201cincremental\u201d increase in exports to Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>Canada exports more than 4 million barrels a day of oil to the United States <\/u><\/strong>and a small portion of that is then re-exported to other countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBoth our liquids and natural gas systems are at or near capacity but we\u2019re exploring options that may be taken to provide more energy to the U.S. and Europe.
