That was the highest number since May 15.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Economists were expecting 360,000 new claims for last week.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Continuing claims, were little changed at 3.52 million.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All of the increase essentially came from two states \u2013 Pennsylvania saw a gain of 21,590, while California rose 15,712, according to data released.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong>Stocks down Friday of last week and down week over week<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.S. stocks finished out another volatile week lower, with the Dow and S&amp;P 500 posting sharp weekly losses and the Nasdaq erasing its advance for the week on Friday of last week. The prospect of higher interest rates, run away inflation, a rising U.S. dollar, and a potential shift by the Fed weighed heavily on the market\u2019s value stocks. <strong><u>The Dow closed lower on Friday of last week, down -533.37 (-1.58%) points closing out the week at 33,290.08, down <\/u><\/strong>-1,189.52 points week over week.&nbsp; <strong><u>The S&amp;P 500 closed lower on Friday of last week, down -55.41 points (-1.31%) and closing out the week at 4,166.45,<\/u><\/strong> down -80.99 points week over week. &nbsp;&nbsp;<strong><u>The Nasdaq closed lower on Friday of last week, down -130.97 points (-0.92%) and closing out the week at 14,030.38, <\/u><\/strong>down -39.04 points week over week.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In overnight trading, DOW futures traded higher and are expected to open up this morning<strong> 196 <\/strong>points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong>Oil Rises Fourth Week in a row on the back of Demand Optimism<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>According to Goldman Sachs, strong U.S. demand growth is being passed on to Europe and emerging markets, where India is showing improvements.<\/u><\/strong>&nbsp; Global oil demand has hit 97 million barrels per oil per day recently, up from 95 million barrels per day from just a few weeks ago. Consumption before the pandemic stood at 100 million barrels per day, so we are almost there folks!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>WTI crude oil rose on Friday of last week +$0.60 a barrel to settle at $71.64 a barrel, <\/u><\/strong>up +73 cents a barrel week over week.&nbsp;&nbsp; <strong><u>Brent crude oil for August delivery closed higher on Friday of last week gaining +$0.43 a barrel, and closing at $73.51<\/u><\/strong>, up $0.82 a barrel week over week.<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>U.S. commercial crude oil inventories decreased by 7.4 million barrels week over week.<\/u><\/strong> At 466.7 million barrels, U.S. crude oil inventories are 5% below the five-year average for this time of year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>Total motor gasoline inventories increased by 2.0 million barrels week over week<\/u><\/strong> and are at par with the five year average for this time of year. Finished gasoline inventories decreased while blending components inventories increased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>Distillate fuel inventories decreased by 1.0 million barrels week over week<\/u><\/strong> and are 6% below the five-year average for this time of year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>Propane\/propylene inventories increased by 1.5 million barrels last week<\/u><\/strong> and are 13% below the five-year average for this time of year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Total U.S. commercial petroleum inventories decreased by 4.6 million barrels last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>U.S. crude oil imports averaged 6.7 million barrels per day last week,<\/u><\/strong> up by 108,000 barrels per day week over week. Over the past four weeks, crude oil imports averaged about 6.3 million barrels per day, 5.9% less than the same four-week period last year. Total motor gasoline imports (including both finished gasoline and gasoline blending components) last week averaged 1.1 million barrels per day, and distillate fuel imports averaged 371,000 barrels per day<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>U.S. crude oil refinery input averaged 16.3 million barrels per day during the week ending June 11, 2021,<\/u><\/strong> which was 412,000 barrels per day more than the previous week\u2019s average. <strong><u>Refineries operated at 92.6% of their operable capacity last week.<\/u><\/strong> Gasoline production increased last week, averaging 9.9 million barrels per day. Distillate fuel production increased last week, averaging 5.1 million barrels per day<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>Oil is higher in overnight trading and, as of the writing of this report, WTI is poised to open at $71.82, up 18 cents per barrel from Friday\u2019s close.&nbsp;<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">North American Rail Traffic<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>Total North American rail volumes were up 15.3% year over year in week 23 <\/u><\/strong>(U.S. +17.9%, Canada +9.3%, Mexico +5.4%) resulting in quarter to date volumes that are up 22.6% year over year and year to date volumes that are up 12.2% year over year (U.S. +13.7%, Canada +9.0%, Mexico +4.7%). 10 of the AAR&#8217;s 11 major traffic categories posted year over year increases with the largest increases coming from intermodal (+14.5%), coal (+35.5%), metallic ores &amp; metals (+28.4%) and chemicals (+17.3%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the East, <strong><u>CSX\u2019s total volumes were up 22.4%,<\/u><\/strong> with the largest increases coming from intermodal (+23.3%), coal (+63.4%) and chemicals (+17.0%). <strong><u>NS\u2019s total volumes were up 17.6%,<\/u><\/strong> with the largest increases coming from intermodal (+11.4%), coal (+74.3%), metals &amp; products (+67.5%) and chemicals (+21.7%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the West, <strong><u>BN\u2019s total volumes were up 20.8%,<\/u><\/strong> with the largest increases coming from intermodal (+20.7%), coal (+24.7%), grain (+17.9%) and metallic ores (+320.2%). <strong><u>UP\u2019s total volumes were up 14.0%,<\/u><\/strong> with the largest increases coming from intermodal (+13.5%), chemicals (+27.9%), coal (+19.2%) and motor vehicles &amp; parts (+19.9%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Canada, <strong><u>CN\u2019s total volumes were up 11.4%,<\/u><\/strong> with the largest increases coming from intermodal (+13.3%), coal (+73.3%), metallic ores (+13.7%) and chemicals (+17.5%). The largest decrease came from farm products (-70.9%). RTMs were up 11.0%. <strong><u>CP\u2019s total volumes were up 14.8%,<\/u><\/strong> with the largest increases coming from intermodal (+18.9%) and coal (+38.3%). The largest decrease came from grain (-21.5%). RTMs were up 10.1%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>KCS\u2019s total volumes were up 21.2%,<\/u><\/strong> with the largest increases coming from intermodal (+21.9%) and petroleum (+61.1%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Source: Stephens<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Rig Count<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>North American rig count is up by 33 rigs week over week.&nbsp; The U.S. was up by 9 rigs week over week<\/u><\/strong> and up by 204 rigs year over year. The U.S. currently has 470 active rigs. Canada\u2019s<strong><u> rig count was up by 24 rigs week over week, and up by 100 rigs year over year<\/u><\/strong> and Canada\u2019s overall rig count is 117 active rigs.&nbsp; <strong><u>Year over year we are up 304 rigs collectively.<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>North American Rig Count Summary<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"645\" height=\"221\" src=\"https:\/\/pflpetroleum.com\/reports\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/NARC-62121.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3690\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pflpetroleum.com\/reports\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/NARC-62121.png 645w, https:\/\/pflpetroleum.com\/reports\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/NARC-62121-300x103.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 645px) 100vw, 645px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Source : Baker Hughes<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Things We are Keeping an Eye on<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\"><li><strong><u>Petroleum by Rail \u2013<\/u><\/strong> <strong>The four-week rolling average of petroleum carloads carried on the six largest North American railroads fell to 23,285, <\/strong>from 23,410 a loss of 125 rail cars week over week. \u00a0Canadian volumes were mixed &#8211; <strong><u>CP shipments declined by 7.4% while CN shipments were up by 3%.\u00a0 U.S. volumes were mostly lower.\u00a0 The CSX had the largest percentage increase, up by 8.7% and the BN had the largest percentage decrease down by 5.4%.<\/u><\/strong><br><\/li><br>\n<li><strong><u>Enbridge line 3 &#8211; Enbridge Inc. is months away from turning on the taps on the first meaningful new pipeline addition out of Canada in six years following a favorable court ruling in Minnesota. <\/u><\/strong>In a 2-1 decision on Monday of last week that pipeline opponents have promised to appeal, Minnesota Court of Appeals upheld Calgary-based Enbridge\u2019s permits to build the 670,000-barrels-per-day Line 3 pipeline replacement across the state. The favorable decision means that Enbridge will avoid another delay in completing the project, which is now expected to be <strong><u>in service in the fourth quarter<\/u><\/strong> of this year<strong><u>.\u00a0 \u201cThese decisions were not made in a vacuum. Rather, they followed vigorous public debate,\u201d<\/u><\/strong> Judge Lucinda Jesson wrote in the decision last Monday.<strong><u> Line 3 will result in 400,000 bpd of excess pipeline capacity out of Western Canada (<\/u><\/strong>See below disputed piece of pipe)\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>Final Line 3 Replacement Project route<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"615\" height=\"351\" src=\"https:\/\/pflpetroleum.com\/reports\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Final-Line-3-Replacement-Project-route.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3691\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pflpetroleum.com\/reports\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Final-Line-3-Replacement-Project-route.png 615w, https:\/\/pflpetroleum.com\/reports\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Final-Line-3-Replacement-Project-route-300x171.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 615px) 100vw, 615px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Source: Enbridge<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<strong><u>As highlighted in last week\u2019s rail report, Canadian oil supply is set to climb to a record high in the second half of 2021, <\/u><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0The decision by Minnesota is fortuitous for the Canadian producer and the pipeline will be filled immediately upon completion a little bit of a headwind for crude by rail out of Canada for the time being.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<br><li><strong><u>CN &amp; KCS Merger update &#8211; A major rail union has asked the Surface Transportation Board to reject CN\u2019s request for a voting trust for its merger with Kansas City Southern. <\/u><\/strong>Jeremy Ferguson, president of the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail, and Transportation Workers, Transportation Division, (SMART) said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/pflpetroleum.com\/reports\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Smart-Filing-June-13-2021.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">filing<\/a>&nbsp; that the trust would harm employees of both railroads because of the amount of debt CN would take on, along with \u201cthe real possibility that the CN transaction would fail the regulatory test in the end.\u201d Calling the merger anti-competitive because of route overlaps \u2014 specifically the parallel CN and KCS routes from the Midwest to New Orleans \u2014<strong><u> Ferguson says the union expects \u201csignificant job losses on either CN or KCS because ultimately, the transaction would require either a sale or abandonment of duplicative rail lines.\u201d<\/u><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<br><li><strong><u>New Mexico &#8211;<\/u><\/strong> According to the EIA, New Mexico had record-high production of crude oil and natural gas in March 2021, averaging 1.16 million barrels per day (b\/d) of crude oil and 6.19 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf\/d) of natural gas.&nbsp; <strong><u>New Mexico has now taken over North Dakota as the countries number 2 producer. <\/u><\/strong>&nbsp;We will see how long it lasts. Then there is the cost of rail to get it to a location near you!  Folks, we really don\u2019t know how we are going to avoid inflation \u2013 maybe consumer spending will have to give, but that in turn will lead to a downturn in in the economy \u2013 it is a very complex situation we seem to find ourselves in right now and no one knows the answer \u2013 stay tuned to PFL as we will try to keep you as informed as we can.\n<\/li><br>\n\n<li>Renewable Identification Numbers (RINS) have plummeted over the last two weeks after making all-time highs as the Biden administration signaled that they may provide relief for the countries refineries. RINS in a very busy session on Friday of last week did, however, close higher on short covering ahead of the weekend.  Ethanol RINS (D6 RINS) closed out the day and the week at $1.43 per RIN, up 15 and \u00bd cents per RIN day over day but down 32 cents per RIN week over week.  Biodiesel RINS (D4 RINS) closed out the day and the week at $1.52 per RIN, up 14 cents per RIN day over day, but down 34 cents per RIN week over week.<\/li><br>\n\n<li>Carbon Capture In The Oil Sands &#8211; Pembina Pipeline Corp. and TC Energy Corp. have announced a plan to develop a carbon transportation and sequestration system in Alberta last week.  The companies say the project will form the backbone of Alberta&#8217;s carbon capture utilization and storage industry.  It will be capable of transporting more than 20 million tons of carbon dioxide annually and can be expanded.
