Oil prices moved sharply lower on Monday as concerns over supply disruptions continued to ease following signs of progress in negotiations between the United States and Iran and the gradual reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Market sentiment improved after U.S. Vice President JD Vance stated that negotiations were making progress and confirmed that the vital shipping corridor remained open, reducing fears of prolonged supply shortages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brent crude settled at $77.90 per barrel<\/strong>, down $2.67 (-3.3%)<\/strong>, while the expiring July WTI contract settled at $74.82 per barrel<\/strong>, down $1.78 (-2.3%)<\/strong>. The more actively traded August WTI contract fell $1.99<\/strong> to $73.86 per barrel<\/strong>. Earlier in the session, prices had briefly rallied above $82 per barrel amid renewed threats from President Trump to resume military action against Iran and reports that Tehran had again restricted traffic through the Strait of Hormuz before retreating as diplomatic developments took center stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

High-level U.S. and Iranian officials concluded a first round of negotiations in Switzerland under the framework of the recently signed memorandum of understanding that extended the existing ceasefire. In a further sign of easing tensions, the U.S. Treasury authorized Iranian oil sales through August 21, allowing Iranian crude and petroleum products to re-enter international markets. Analysts noted that the return of Iranian exports represents additional supply entering an already improving market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shipping activity through the Strait of Hormuz also showed signs of recovery, with crude tankers successfully transiting the waterway and major regional producers, including the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Iraq, offering additional volumes to customers. While analysts expect several million barrels per day of production to return over the coming months, they caution that a full restoration of pre-war output and export capacity remains unlikely before year-end due to logistical challenges, infrastructure damage, and refinery disruptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite improving supply prospects, global inventories remain historically low. U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve inventories fell by another 9.05 million barrels<\/strong>, marking one of the largest drawdowns on record and highlighting the extent to which emergency reserves have been used to offset supply disruptions during the conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
