At 436.6 million barrels, <strong><u>U.S. crude oil inventories are 1% below the five-year average for this time of year. <\/u><\/strong><strong><u><\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"920\" height=\"400\" 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>U.S. crude oil imports averaged 6.3 million barrels per day <\/u><\/strong>during the week ending December 22nd, 2023, <strong><u>a decrease of 415,000 barrels per day week-over-week<\/u><\/strong>. Total carloads for the week ending on December 22nd, 2023 were 354,405, up (21.4%) compared with the same week in 2022, while weekly intermodal volume was 317,296, up (23.65%) compared to the same week in 2022. 11 of the AAR\u2019s 11 major traffic categories posted year over year increases with the most significant increase from Motor Vehicles and Parts (+31.19%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the East, <strong><u>CSX\u2019s total volumes were up (21.27%)<\/u><\/strong>, with the largest increase coming from Motor Vehicles and Parts (+39.17%). <strong><u>NS\u2019s volumes were up (+18.42%),<\/u><\/strong> with the largest increase coming from Motor Vehicles and Parts (+34.7%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the West, <strong><u>BN\u2019s total volumes were up (+34.06%)<\/u><\/strong>, with the largest increase coming from Coal (+61.28%). <strong><u>UP\u2019s total rail volumes were up (+18.81%)<\/u><\/strong> with the largest increase coming from Petroleum and Petroleum Products (+32.75%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Canada, <strong><u>CN\u2019s total rail volumes were up (18.66%)<\/u><\/strong> with the largest increase coming from Other (+52.33%) and the largest decrease coming from Grain (-34.28%). <strong><u>CP\u2019s total rail volumes were up (40.25%)<\/u><\/strong> with the largest increase coming from Motor Vehicles and Parts (+89.37%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>KCS\u2019s total rail volumes were down (-1.13%)<\/u><\/strong> with the largest decrease coming from Other (-37.31%) and the largest increase coming from Nonmetallic Minerals (+20.13%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><a id=\"_msocom_1\"><\/a><strong>Source Data: AAR &#8211; PFL Analytics<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center has-black-color has-text-color\" id=\"rig-count\"><strong><u>Rig Count<\/u><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>North American rig count was down by -58 rigs week-over-week. U.S. rig count was up by +2 rigs week-over-week,<\/u><\/strong> but down by -157 rigs year-over-year. The U.S. currently has 622 active rigs. <strong><u>Canada\u2019s rig count was down by -60 rigs week-over-week<\/u><\/strong> , flat year over year.&nbsp; Canada\u2019s overall rig count is 86 active rigs. Hopefully, the trend continues as we head into 2024.
